3 of the Most Important Outdoor Patio Trends for 2025
I’m doing it. People told me not to, but I just can’t wait any longer. It’s like an impossible itch that I just haven’t been able to scratch yet.
OK, here it is…
This is the year that I build my own garden.
Alright, you got me. Maybe nobody told me NOT to have a garden… If anything, that was a little impostor voice in my head. It’s a little dramatic, I know. But it’s going to be a lot of work. And there’s a lot to learn. But I’m ready for it.
In part of my journey to lean just a little bit more towards self-sufficiency, to reduce eating ultra-processed foods, to help our butterflies and bee friends, to get outside and work my body and brain more in different ways… These are all benefits I’m seeing to starting a garden.
But in addition to all of that… It’s a way to make my yard space a personal oasis for patio season in Minnesota.
Patio season.
Oh, how I love stepping into the fresh air, lounging on a cushioned seat, cozying up with a refreshing drink in hand - tea in the mornings, and sparkling water in the evenings - listening to the birds chirp, and admiring the scenery around me. There’s something that hits differently about being outside.
Having a space where you can indulge in all of those things is so special. And if you have the opportunity with a space to make it your own, it’s SO worth it.
While I’m an advocate for decorating and making a space according to what YOU love, some trends will be taking over for the 2025 patio season. Whether you choose to do anything with these trends is up to you. But I love keeping up with what’s going on in the future trend world, outside of my own mind and interests. If you are too, or if you need a little push for patio ideas this year, take a look at the following patio trends that will dominate as summer trends 2025.
Summer Patio Trends That Will Be Everywhere in 2025
I’ve done the research so you don’t have to, and I’ve compiled it into three outdoor patio trends for easy reading. BONUS: There are visual moodboards for each! This will allow you to see just what to expect, and maybe it’ll inspire you.
Vintage Poolside
Picture this: You’re watching a movie that takes place in 1958, set at an American motel (an increasingly common destination at the time), where visitors are having a pool party. The sun is shining, the drinks are pouring, and everyone is either floating on inner tubes, lounging under an umbrella, or taking dives off the diving board.
Do yourself a favor and Google “1950s Pool Party.” You won’t regret it.
This vintage poolside trend for 2025 is all about summertime nostalgia by mixing classic stripes with retro-modern sophistication vibes. The summer aesthetic is colorful, featuring items like umbrellas with scalloped or fringe edges, organic-shaped outdoor furniture, and bold patterns balanced with pastel solids.
It brings with it an essence of carefree fun and relaxation. Just like the vibes from the 1958 pool party.
I. Am. Here for it.
We’re seeing classic stripes from the 50s and 60s, florals from the 60s and 70s, and colorful woven details often found in the 90s. All brought together in a modern way that makes it perfect for today. It also grabs influences from Italian coasts and the Italian Riviera with the mix of colors.
It’s the perfect way to blend colorful details or wavy trims, without going overboard if you don’t want to.

Here are some ideas to incorporate the Vintage Poolside trend into your 2025 patio design:
→ Want to balance colors with neutrals to keep your patio poised? Go for it. Aim to keep your cushions as neutral solids and incorporate color or graphics through pillows, a rug, an umbrella, or a side table. These items are more like the accessories that can dress up or dress down a space to your liking, and the cushions and furniture itself are more of the “core” neutrals that you won’t change as often.
→ Don’t have a pool? No problem. Me neither. While this trend draws from poolside vibes, the essence of carefree lounging can be one in the same - whether you’re on a hillside deck in the mountains or a paved patio amongst a garden.
→ Another approach to balance your patio design with elements of this trend is to upgrade your outdoor furniture to include nostalgic curved line silhouettes, or with oversized bean bag chairs or loungers. By going bold with the furniture, the accessories can be more streamlined as solid colors, if you don’t want to go all-in on a singular trend this year. Totally up to you!
2. Crafty Garden Retreat
Plants. Wildlife. Culture. Oh my.
What beauty, am I right?
This crafty garden retreat trend takes exploring nature to new heights through eclectic botanical art and a handcrafted feel within your outdoor patio decor. It also involves countryside garden design to feel like you are one with all of the natural elements. This patio design is for the bohemian at heart, the ones who want to experience beyond conventional living - focusing on art and intrinsic means.
To live with a slower lifestyle is an increasing movement. People are craving to experience more holistic styles in their daily lives, which involves moving towards becoming more self-sufficient, learning heirloom-esque crafts, and stressing less about the American grind. This trend evokes just that. To be free-spirited yet sophisticated in a natural habitat.
Many people can relate to this trajectory of moving towards peaceful settings. I am one of those people.
This trend is a quite literal representation of nature, so it’s perfect for outdoor patios in 2025. And it may be easier to incorporate into your patio design than you think.

Here are some ideas to incorporate this trend into your 2025 patio design:
→ Plants. Add plants. Don’t have a space for a garden? That’s OK - find some planters that bring you joy, and add some plants to them. There are a variety of plants that will thrive in all kinds of environments; just find out which ones will grow in your space. The more the better!
→ Handcrafted-style cushions or pillows. You know, the ones that look (or are) as though someone hand-stitched them, or have traditionally applied artwork like block printing or embroidery. Beauty is in the making.
→ DIY your own patio accessories! This is a super fun way to incorporate your personal style and craft into your outdoor space this season. It can be so simple, too. Find some outdoor fabric at your local craft store, then find a flower or fruit that makes you happy, apply fabric paint to it, and press it down onto the fabric to create your own print. You can then turn this patterned fabric into an outdoor throw pillow or cushion - leave it up to the imagination!
3. Tropical Escape
What would you give to be on vacation in a tropical country where monkeys run free, colorful birds are chirping in nearby palm trees, and you’re lounging in a pool with nature enveloping all around the scene? I know I would love to be wherever that is right now.
Well, you can have it at your own patio, no matter where you live. This trend is called Tropical Escape, and I’m not sure I truly need to say much more to get the point across. But I will!
Think: palm trees, the sun, toucans and parrots, cheetahs and bananas, bold colors, and cultural prints and patterns. Take those elements, and apply them everywhere your heart desires! Bold is the whole point of this trend, so let’s screw on our maximalist brains and create the tropical escape we so badly want.

Here are some ideas to incorporate this trend into your 2025 patio design:
→ Tropical leaves and florals, anywhere. On your cushions, pillows, rug, or ottoman - there’s no wrong place to have these prints and patterns.
→ Tropical animals, in the form of animal prints or literal representations in shaped pillows or statues. They can be your patio companions if you’re feeling lonesome, why not?
→ Don’t want to go totally all-in on the maximalist environment? That’s OK. You can incorporate some elements while balancing the overall patio design by choosing either solid-colored cushions and a palm leaf outdoor rug, or tropical floral cushions with solid-colored pillows. The fun part is that the choice is completely yours!
There you have it. Three of the most important patio trends for this year.
What do you think? Anything that strikes your interest? Anything that brings forward inspiration as you get ready for this long-awaited patio season of 2025? Maybe you like elements of several trends (like me), or could see yourself going all-in on one.
Like I said before, just do what you love! If you want to mix and match from different trends, go for it! If you don’t care for any of them, that’s OK too - but now you know what’s coming for outdoor patio ideas for 2025.
How I’ll be implementing some of these trends into my patio this season:
I’ll say this just ONE MORE TIME for those of you in the back - do what YOU want and what makes you happy!
It’s so easy to find inspiration in many things, and if what gives you a twinkle in your eyes belongs to a variety of artifacts, lean into it! Personal styles don’t typically change as frequently as trends do. And remember, trends live in a circular cycle - if they’re out one year, they will return yet again another year.
For me, I’m completely revamping my patio this year. Remember how I started this post: I’m designing my own garden, which is severely influencing my outdoor space!
Personally, my style leans a bit girly, maximalist-esque, with a focus on modern art deco and vintage elements. See? It sounds like an odd mix. But I lean into it and make it work because that’s what I like!
Now, when looking at these patio trends, I’m inspired by a mix of all three. So for my patio design this year, I’ll be mixing and matching trends because that’s what makes sense to my style. And I’m SO excited to get started!
When thinking about my personal paradise to be, I anchor much of it with the garden, because that’s a focal point within my patio space. Going from there, I’ll then incorporate pretty colored cushions to my patio set. I’ll pull the color and aesthetic design from Vintage Poolside into my patio decor, then the garden oasis elements from Cottage Garden Retreat, and finally, shaped pillows of various tropical fruits or animals from Tropical Escape to finish the space!
Here’s a mini moodboard I created for my outdoor space for 2025:
The images I pulled together here are meant to remind me of what I envision for my outdoor oasis this year. My garden will have an interactive approach with an arch filled with delicious, juicy cherry tomatoes. Much of the greenery will come from my vegetable garden, and the patio space will be cozy with a light wicker lounge set adorned with colorful and shaped pillows. I want to feel like I’m in my own little paradise, and this mood board helps me piece the vibes together.
Lastly, just a quick note - moodboards are an excellent way to put all of your inspiration and vibes into one place! I’d recommend you do this too, so you have a visual holding your inspirations to refer back to. You can do this physically with pieced-together magazine clippings, or digitally by finding any image that brings you happiness. Check out my other blog post to learn more about moodboards here.
Finally, HAPPY SPRING and I hope you found these trends helpful for setting up your Summer patio this year - if you try any of these out, please leave a comment and let me know how it turned out! 🙂
